Chennai-based Spacetech startup OrbitAID has raised $1.5 million in a pre-seed funding round led by Unicorn India Ventures, with additional participation from TANSIM, the Tamil Nadu government’s startup initiative. The funding will be utilized to advance key projects, including an in-space demonstration of docking and refueling operations, scaling facilities for on-orbit servicing, and further developing its Standard Interface Docking and Refueling Port (SIDRP) for commercial readiness. The company also aims to expand its team to support upcoming ventures.
Founded in 2021 by Sakthikumar R, Nikhil Balasubramanian, and Mano Balaji K, OrbitAID focuses on creating sustainable space operations through innovative on-orbit refueling technologies.
Its mission is to establish a network of orbital fuel stations to extend the lifespan of satellites, reduce space debris, and enhance the sustainability of space infrastructure. The company’s flagship product, SIDRP, is designed to improve satellite refueling accessibility and reliability.
OrbitAID recently achieved a significant milestone by successfully testing its patented SIDRP technology on a zero-gravity flight in Florida, demonstrating its capability for docking, refueling, and proximity operations under simulated space conditions. This marks a critical step toward commercializing its technology and disrupting the outer space servicing market.
Commenting on the funding, Sakthikumar R, Founder & CEO of OrbitAID, says “We are excited to have secured funding from Unicorn India Ventures and TANSIM. This milestone not only validates our vision but also reflects the dedication of our team in advancing sustainable space operations. With this funding, we will conduct our in-orbit demonstration in space for docking and refueling, bringing us closer to revolutionizing satellite servicing and ensuring a sustainable future in space.”
