Surat, an emerging city in the state of Gujarat, is known as the textile city and the epithet is perfectly suited to the city. Due to its proximity to the sea, Surat has always been an industrial hub in the country. The textile industry is one of the oldest and the most widespread industries in Surat. A major part of the city’s population is associated with the textile industry. But in the last few years, the city has also expanded its
manufacturing to new areas like petrochemicals, steel and pharmaceuticals. Apart from being the second largest city in the state, Surat also has one of the fastest growing economies in the country. In 2020, the city’s GDP was estimated at $68 billion.
In 2020, Vijay Rupani, Chief Minister of Gujarat approved the ‘Surat Development Plan-2035’ that is expected to give an impetus of the lockdown battered real estate sector. Expectations are also there that it could hasten important projects like the Ahmedabad-Mumbai bullet train and the overall infrastructure development in and around the city. “One of the main reasons behind the growth of Surat’s manufacturing repertoire is the city’s ability to adapt to changes and the latest trends”, says Manikant R Momaya, Managing Director, Surat Textile Mills.
Medical Equipment Industry
The pharmaceutical and healthcare industry is very active in India. Many powerful players have started investing in this sector as well in Surat. Companies like Wellona Pharma have a massive manufacturing compound and all of its products are subjected to rigorous quality testing. These pharmaceutical companies also have an impressive portfolio of products ranging from medical equipment like syringes, inhalers etc. to medicines like antibiotics, antifungals etc.
Glass Containers
There are many companies established in Surat in the last one decade which are specialised in the production of glass containers. Some new entrants like Sunrise Glass Industries is specialised in manufacturing highly exclusive glass bottles for wine distilleries, beer breweries, soft drink companies etc. Usually, these companies are located close to the raw material source and have access to the container market.
