India is fast reaching self-sufficiency in almost all sectors, particularly automotive, the local buyers were previously dependent on imports. Historically, machineries have been imported from the developed countries such as Japan, Europe, and America. Nonetheless, in the past few years, a noticeable trend towards indigenization has been noticed. The emphasis now is on creating products similar to those produced previously abroad, with the focus on quality at reasonable prices. This change has brought faith to India’s capacity as a manufacturing center, attracting interest and confidence among global markets.
Santosh Habade, Founder Director
SMT Systems is building this faith by developing import substitute precision machines for bearing applications and others. The company has expanded its reach, even exporting machines to China since 2021, a pointer of its dominance in the international market.
Its brands have tremendous potential especially in the growing Indian market where the company wants to be established before it goes into the international markets.
Focused on turnkey solutions for bearing manufacturers, the company’s products can be custom built to fully provide automation of bearing assembly, from 30 millimeters to 300 millimeters in diameter. Their setups are made to be able to do the whole bearing assembly process on their own, without the need for a human to be there to operate them. “Since its founding in 2009, SMT Systems has worked with a well-defined objective of providing low-cost automation solutions for the Indian market that could serve as import substitutes,” says Santosh Habade, Founder Director, SMT Systems.
Complete Transmission Solutions
The company is now implementing the same end-to-end solutions in the automotive transmission field just like in the bearing industry. Their range of products includes automatic and semi-automatic machines as well as complete production assembly lines for a wide variety of automotive components such as gearboxes, differential gearboxes, transmission drive chains, axles, and many more. So far they are responsible for everything that comes between the engine and the tires including necessary material handling systems. They come up with solutions for component washing, quality inspection, component assembly, intermediate testing, end of line testing and material handling. This is in line with their unwavering pursuit of quality, which is demonstrated by each machine coming with quality measuring solutions and the production of precise parts as the number one priority for them.
Tailored Precision Automation
SMT Systems starts with gaining a deep understanding of the clients' needs as well as their product specifications. Acting as a detailed examiner, they suggest specific automation technique to fit their situation. They also demonstrate their previous projects in the form of videos and pictures, thus giving the clients a full picture of their skills and achievements. Extending their coverage beyond national boundaries, they have been working with European countries and Slovakia. Nevertheless, because of their current concentration on automotive industry, they understand the Indian market as a huge area of growth.
Global Expansion Strategy
One of SMT Systems’ specializations is industrial automation and production of special purpose machines. In this regard, it is not only a manufacturer of import substitute products but also an emerging leader in this field. In 2023, the company managed to secure a transmission assembly line deal from a US company which is based in India. This was their first time to manufacture automatic transmission assembly.
Going forward, the company’s goal is to expand its operations to the international market. Through the provision of similar automation solutions at a lower price, it plans to primarily target the countries like Europe and America, in turn looking to become the credible suppliers at the international level.
