OCTOBER 20238TOP STORIESBARAUNI-GUWAHATI PIPELINE WILL PROVIDE GAS IN GUWAHATI BY END OF THE YEARBy the end of the year, Guwahati will receive gas from the Barauni-Guwahati Pipeline, and Assam will be connected to the National Gas Grid. The Department of Industries, Commerce & Public Enterprises, Government of Assam, organised the Gas Conclave, a one-day brainstorming event, in Guwahati to discuss the opportunities and difficulties associated with using natural gas.Bimal Bora, the minister of industries and commerce, praised Assam for its pioneering work in the nation's oil and gas industries and pointed out that the Hydro-carbon Vision 2030 for North-East India of the Central Government has opened up a number of opportunities for economic growth using natural gas. He also mentioned how Assam has ample natural gas reserves that it can run its economy entirely on this clean and sustainable fuel. He emphasised the developing cooperation among the many players of the entire natural gas value chain in this regard.The Barauni-Guwahati Pipeline would be able to supply gas to Guwahati by the end of the year, according to a spokesman of GAIL India, signaling a significant development in the State's connection to the National Gas Grid. This will eventually make it possible to connect natural gas producers, importers, and end users in a seamless manner. INDIA WILL ACHIEVE ITS 500 GW RENEWABLE ENERGY TARGET: R. K. SINGHIndia's non-fossil energy capacity now stands at 188,000 megawatts, with an additional 88,000 megawatts already being installed. According to the Union Minister of Power and New & Renewable Energy, India will meet its 500 GW renewable energy objective before schedule. The Minister declared, "We vowed to reach 500 gigawatts by 2030, and we are ready to meet that objective far in advance. India only produces 4 percent of the world's carbon dioxide load, Minister Singh observed, while having 17 percent of the world's population. The Minister also emphasized India's responsible energy consumption practices by pointing out that the country's per capita emissions are roughly 2.2 tonnes, which is much less than the global average of 6.3 tonnes.The Minister underscored the government's commitment to environmental stewardship. He affirmed that India is the only major global economy whose energy transition actions are aligned with limiting the global temperature rise to under two degrees Celsius. Moreover, he also mentioned India's achievement of all its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) nearly a decade earlier than committed. Speaking on occasion, Bhupinder Singh Bhalla, Secretary of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, delineated India's accelerated renewable energy capacity addition strategy."Last year, we achieved a renewable energy capacity addition of 15 gigawatts. This year, we are targeting an increase to 25 gigawatts, with plans to escalate it further to 40 gigawatts next year," said Secretary Bhalla. He alluded to the annual bidding trajectory for the next five years, aiming for 50 gigawatts of new capacity each year, including at least 10 gigawatts in the wind sector. President of FICCI and Managing Director of Indian Metals & Ferro Alloys Subhrakant Panda outlined PM Narendra Modi's Panchamrit statement at COP26, demonstrating India's commitment to achieve Net Zero by 2070.
