MAY 20239India produced 893.08 million tonnes of coal total in 2022­2023 compared to 778.19 in 2021­2022; this is a 14.78 percent increase. In the current fiscal year,the government wants to increase production to 1,012 million tonnes. Coal India Limited (CIL) has produced 703.21 million tonnes more over the past five years compared to the 606.89 million tonnes it produced in 2018­2019, a gain of 15.9 percent. Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) has demonstrated growth, going from 64.40 million tonnes in 2018­19 to 67.14 million tonnes in 2022­23, an increase of 4.3 percent.With an increase of 113.7 percent from 57.43 million tonnes in 2018­19 to 122.72 million tonnes in 2022­23, captive and other mines have also surpassed other producers in terms of coal production. The central government has given its nod for the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) to be implemented in the Union Territory of Ladakh at a sanctioned cost of Rs 687.05 crore. According to them, the RDSS received approval from the ministry of power for installation in Ladakh. Tsewang Paljor, the chief engineer for distribution at the Ladakh Power Development Department (LPDD), and A. K. Gahlot, the executive director of WAPCOS Limited, signed a contract in the presence of Ravinder Kumar, the administrative secretary for power in Ladakh.The plan includes further loss reduction projects in the Leh and Kargil districts of Ladakh, as well as the downline infrastructure in the Zanskar region and the grid connectivity of the Changthang region. The designation of WAPCOS, a project of the Indian government, as the project management organisation (PMA) for the implementation of the RDSS in Ladakh was also accepted by the minister of power.The Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme offers result-linked financial assistance to DISCOMs for the upgrading of supply infrastructure in order to increase operational efficiencies and financial sustainability, contingent upon completing pre-qualifying requirements and attaining fundamental minimum benchmarks.
