India is a developing economy and recent policy announcements of the Government with thrust on infrastructure development and low cost housing shall boost the demand for steel bars. The consumption of steel is likely to increase substantially. We can expect to see huge expansions in capacity by existing Steel Bar manufacturers and substantial new capacity additions in Steel Bar manufacturing sector in the coming decade.
The major expectations of customers from steel manufacturers is to ensure savings in construction cost of Steel while simultaneously ensuring that the steel being used has required properties to bear load and give long life to construction. The customer also expects full protection from vibratory load like earthquake to its construction from the steel used.
This is where RHL Profiles plays a major role. RHL GOLD Bars have required chemical composition & physical parameters like Tensile Strength, Elongation, TS/YS ratio to impart all these properties in the Bars. This has been achieved by the company by inculcating strict quality control culture procedure. The company’s strategy is to develop Steel Bars which have greater strength while simultaneously maintaining other required properties.
Quality as the Priority
RHL Profiles has all required facilities to manufacture all grades of TMT Bars as per IS:1786. Sizes of the Bars produced by the company are six mm – 32mm in diameter. The company has ‘State of the Art’ fully automatic Rolling Mill comprising atomized reheating furnace, ‘Y’ Table, Turning Wall, 530mm roughing mill, 6 stand Intermediate Mill, 12 Stand Continuous Mill, Flying Shears, Twin Channel and Automatic Rake type Cooling Bed. Along with all the above facilities, the company also ensures selective purchase of the right raw materials, online quality testing and latest German Quenching technology where water temperature and water pressure are varied, based on the grade and size of the TMT that is to be produced.
Krishan Kumar Somani, MD, RHL Profiles states, “Advanced automation results in production of high strength bars with uniform physical and mechanical properties. Each bar is atmospherically cooled on the automatic rake type cooling bed before being cut in 12 mtr sizes and packed in 50 kgs bundle to be supplied in the market. The quality testing of the bars is done at every 15 minute interval to ensure production of high ductile TMT Bars having superior strength and elongation. The most popular grade in the market currently is FE500 which is regularly produced by the company while the other grades like FE 550 and FE 600 are made only against order. The company is also exploring alternatives of producing higher grades of TMT Bars to cater to the growing needs where steel costs can be further optimized in an era of increasing in steel prices".

Future Projections
According to the MD, the present per capita Steel consumption of our country is around 70 kgs and is very low compared to developing economy per capita consumption of 150 kgs. In a growing economy where per capita income is increasing, the steel consumption is likely to double in the coming decades. Krishan concludes, “Our company’s policy is to cater to those customers who are using steel for their own consumption as they care for quality and look into all the quality parameters. We consider the increased demand for steel consumption an opportunity to increase our production and market share in the steel market".
