The Indian automotive sector and the broader Indian manufacturing sector is poised for exponential growth. The government has come up with a strong vision and appropriate policies for India to become self-reliant, reduce imports of value added products, develop the much needed skills and bring more domestic value addition to the supply chain.
Several automotive OEMs are prepared to embrace increasing local sourcing of special steel for their products and the local steel industry is always ready to support these initiatives. Arjas Steel sits atop this changing trend in the industry and has already been making strong progress to become one of India’s leading special steel producer.
Arjas Steel is anintegrated steel manufacturer producing products of Special SteelQuality (alloy and micro-alloy steel of various grades), and in different profiles in the form of bars of various cross sections such as rounds, Hexagons, Round Corner Squares, Flats etc. The company produces a variety of alloy steel and micro-alloy steel bars for processing into automotive components that are typically used in engine, transmission systems, steering systems, wheel hubs etc.
Arjas Steel also supplies steel that finds applications in wind energy turbine assemblies, transmission towers and metros. The company develops and produces specific grades with an aim to add value and reduce wastage in the customers’ processes. Besides, the steel is custom-made for the specific component, for each and every customer.
Arjas Steel set sail on its journey as a special steel producer in 2013 when the firm sold its first bar to the fastener industry. In the last 8 years, Arjas has grown in various dimensions including establishing 2 manufacturing locations, in Tadipatri Andhra Pradesh and in MandiGobindgarh Punjab. Froma capacity of 300,000 tons per year, Arjas has evolved to be able
to produce 450,000 tons per year today. Arjas is approved and qualified by most automotive OEMs in India and supplies to a wide range of passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, tractors, 2 wheelers, off road vehicles etc.
Arjas Steel completely integrated plant comprises of all operations from iron ore and coal as raw materials to the final finished products and extensive quality assurance and inspection systems. The company also produces 21 MW of power using waste heat recovery and by product gas, making it 70 percent self-sufficient with green energy.
Thebar products are then processed by Arjas Steel’s customers into various components for myriad of applications across different industrial sectors such as automotive, wind energy, traditional power generation, railways, metros, defence, textile machinery etc.
Demonstrating Expertise in Quality & Technical Finesse
Arjas Steel prides itself as an innovative steel maker and capable of providing solutions to customer’s specific process problems. One such customer who regularly purchases medium carbon Chromium- Molybdenum Steel and processes the steel through cold forging route had observed cracks during his process and wanted to eliminate it.
Arjas steel has worked with many customers for developing bespoke solutions to their challenges
Arjas Steel through various consultations and after looking through the customer’s process in detail, recommended to the customer that his Sulphur specification should be revised downwards. With the revised Sulphur chemistry, heats were casted, supplied to customer and trials taken. Result: No cracks issue was raised by the customer in the subsequent supplies. Thus, in a joint effort with the customer this challenge was overcome.
Arjas Steel has worked with many customers for developing bespoke solutions to their challenges. Arjas also focuses on how to add value to the customer and help them in value engineering. This can be either by providing them with tighter tolerances, specific lengths or shapes which can reduce the wastage in their processes. Arjas has also set up heat treatment and bright bar processes that enable it to give more value added solutions to the customer’s needs. By having its rolling program in such a way that it produces most sizes, twice a month, Arjas is able to help customers reduce their inventory and giving them more flexibility when ordering steel, closer to when they actually want them in production.
“In the near future, say 5-10 years, Indian automotive needs and specific demands on lighter steel, more durable steel will certainly grow. We expect as India urbanizes more and more people can afford vehicles and migrate to better vehicles, there will be a constant drive in the auto industry. Arjas Steel is ready and always there to support our customers during this phase,” concludes Sridhar Krishnamoorthy, Managing Director, Arjas Steel.
