On Jan 7, the Indian Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) began producing oil from its deepwater project in the Krishna Godavari basin off India's east coast. Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri chose X and called it "First oil." Production has commenced on the complex and challenging deepwater block KG-DWN-98/2 in the Bay of Bengal Sea.
The Union Minister also said the country's power production from the deep Krishna Godavari region will increase.

"First Oil" production commences from the complex and difficult deepwater KG-DWN-98/2 Block, situated off the coast of the Bay of Bengal," he said.
He further said that the production is expected to be 45,000 barrels per day and over 10 million cubic meters of gas per day, contributing towards an energy Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
"This project is expected to add 7 percent to current national oil production and 7 percent to national Natural Gas production!" he added.
