The growth of the microbiome market has led to research impacting a range of applications from precision diagnostics to deep space travels. However, the most crucial factor that will drive this growth cannot be just standalone research, but product development backed by concrete research. Bangalore based Xome Life Sciences well understands this and thus,it has come up with scientifically backed services and products catering to the wholesome development of the medical fraternity in India.
Founded in 2020 by research entrepreneurs, Xome is a biotechnology company pioneering microbiome research with a vision to transform Personalized Healthcare. “Our team of 12 is ambitious and young at heart. All the members together bring complementary skill sets to help the venture propel in the right direction”, says Piyush Bhanu, Founder & CEO, Xome.
Xome has both - long-term as well as a short-term vision. In the longer run, the firm aims to solve the Unified Microbiome Project to understand how the plant and animal microbiome influence the human microbiome. On the other hand, from a business standpoint, Xome is launching a new women-
centric brand 'Missy' which includes personalized tests and microbiome-based products that will empower women to take proactive decisions about their everyday health and lifestyle choices.
Biotechnology to Transform Everyday Products
Xome’s flagship ‘Missy’ is one of the first D2C brands getting launched following a simple three-step process. It is also an example of a product backed by research leveraging biotechnology at its core. While creating Missy, the company first identified the most untapped healthcare need for women, then, it identified the role that the microbiome plays in influencing specific health issues. This was followed by an in-depth microbiome analysis to identify the important microbes and their biochemical pathways. Finally, based on the microbiome analysis, the company developed a simple, easy to use everyday product, Missy, to help women self-diagnose the issue and also solve the problem.
Besides Missy, in the past two years, the team at Xome has also developed a range of products to help Doctors make better decisions such as food tests for dieticians, nutritionists and oral health tests for dentists to help uplift the dental infrastructure in rural India. These products helped bridge the gap in the market thus catering to a very niche segment. “We were primarily involved in deep-tech microbiome research and now we are aiming to nurture and grow our consumer brands such as Missy which are backed by our microbiome research”, adds Piyush.

Towards the Future
The microbiome research in India is in its infancy and Xome is one of the few players pioneering this area of research.“In comparison to competitors, we intend to establish ourselves as a consumer brand where we not just research but also develop microbiome- based end products”, says Piyush. The company’s primary focus in the future will be to continually empower as many women as possible and help them make better health-related choices. The team firmly believes that women are the backbone of this country, and hopes to convert every consumer into its brand ambassador. “At Xome, we want to keep you and your microbes happy by helping you make better health-related decisions”, concludes Piyush.
