In an era where environmental concerns dominate global discourse, waste management has become a critical area demanding innovative solutions. Startups are stepping up, revolutionizing waste management with cutting-edge technologies and sustainable practices. As urbanization and industrialization surge, waste generation has reached unprecedented levels, with global waste projected to grow by 70 percent by 2050. This urgent scenario underscores the need for effective waste management systems that mitigate environmental impact and promote resource recovery and sustainability. Located in Bangalore, Miglu Enviro Solutions is at the forefront of this movement, dedicated since its establishment to reshaping plastic waste management and promoting sustainability from the ground up. With a steadfast commitment to sustainability, the firm aims to achieve 100 percent circularity of plastics, ensuring their efficient and responsible use throughout their lifecycle.
Miglu Enviro Solutions excels in plastic waste management through specialized sorting and shredding processes. Plastic waste encompasses multiple categories, generally classified into seven groups. However, the firm goes beyond this standard, meticulously sorting around 40-42 distinct categories daily based on colour, quality, and composition. The company’s experienced workforce adeptly navigates the complexities of modern plastics, which often include unknown or mixed materials. Miglu Enviro Solutions categorizes plastics by processing methods, such as injection and blow molding, ensuring precise sorting.
After sorting, the firm shreds the plastics into smaller pieces, a crucial step in the recycling process, preparing them for further processing into granules.
Innovating Waste Management with IoT
“In our commitment to cuttingedge waste management, we have implemented IoT technology to enhance our sorting and data capture processes. We have prioritized comprehensive data collection across all steps—ranging from inward and outward processing to waste stream tracking. The integration of IoT has revolutionized our operations by enabling precise data capture and realtime tracking of sorting and shredding activities. This system provides brands with verified data on waste handling, ensuring transparency and efficiency”, shares K N Sharan Subaiah, Director. By centralizing data collection through IoT devices, the firm not only improve facility efficiency but also offer verifiable proof of processed plastic quantities, addressing the challenges of informal market documentation.
The firm is dedicated to transforming the unorganized plastic waste management sector into a structured, efficient system. Miglu Enviro Solutions closely collaborates with vendors, emphasizing the importance of data capture, invoicing, and digital transactions, and assisting them in setting up bank accounts. Initially met with resistance, the firm’s persistent efforts have led vendors to appreciate the efficiency and security of these changes. Additionally, the company has significantly improved working conditions for its facility workers by introducing semi-automated lines and proper protective equipment.
By implementing structured processes & digital integration, we are improving efficiency & creating a sustainable, dignified future for all stakeholders in plastic waste management
Expanding Horizons
“Our long-term vision focuses on establishing a formal recycling unit within the next three to four years. In the short term, we aim to expand our solutions beyond rigid plastics to include various plastic materials and other recyclable materials like paper. Our objective is to set up a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) capable of handling over 500-600 tons of waste per month. This privately operated MRF will collaborate with aggregators, efficiently sorting their collected materials and supplying them to recyclers”, adds K N Sharan Subaiah. Within the next two years, the firm plans to streamline these processes and, ultimately, transition into a fullyfledged recycling operation, converting sorted plastics into granules for direct sale to brands. By doing so, the company aspires to become a comprehensive recycler, significantly contributing to the circular economy.
