The hydroponic and aeroponic industry is still in the nascent stage and has a lot of potential to grow if supported by the right technology at the right price. Cost effective alternatives are mostly used in this aspect as enterprises opt for price point friendly techniques or solutions. Consumers however are inclining towards living a healthier and cleaner lifestyle with a total market size of 21 billion USD world over.
Considering this as the most significant factor and with the larger picture of assuring food security along with conserving natural resources, Evergreen Farms has invested resources and time in the research and development of hydroponic and aeroponic products. “Over the last four years, we have researched and learned the market. Now we are ready to scale and focus on market acquisition. We mainly use hydroponics, but we experiment with aeroponics, and it is giving us good results, whereas we feel that we can do far better,” says Mr. Prasanth Ramachandran, Founder ofEvergreen Farms.
Prasanth Ramachandran has a degree in engineering and has studied, implemented and developed hydroponic farming methods since 2017. His team comprises of Ashok Kumar who owns a degree in agriculture along with a team of four others namely Prem, Anil, Milan, and Gita.
The farm presently can produce more than 4 tones of fresh produce every month. Apart from the obvious objective of ensuring that fresh produce is delivered as fast as possible, Prasanth and his team believe that the development of trust
is significant in this space. “We ensure high quality with every delivery. We also harvest as close to the delivery timeline as possible and our proximity to the city helps us deliver in a matter of hours than days,” he adds. The innovative Agritech ventures implemented in businesses are extensively supporting the hydroponic industry to grow and it is expected to play a pivotal role in the long run.
The major factors driving the growth include increased awareness and inclination of the urban population toward fresh, clean, and healthy eating. The pandemic too added the surge in this awareness and demand for healthier options. “We have relied on advanced research and techniques from the world over and have developed our systems from the scratch. We also have the advantage of the data we have collected on consumer preferences with respect to the produce including demand cycles during different seasons.
This puts us in a unique position as our systems are designed and tailored for the Indian climatic conditions, and market requirements” Prasanth defines. Evergreen Farms also prides itself in maintaining the same selling cost of produce through the year and prices are not subject to climatic conditions or seasonal demand surges. Most of the systems used by Evergreen Farms are automated except for transplanting and harvesting.
The company has also invested significant time in research and developmentof its own proprietary fertigation and climate control monitoring systems to efficiently maintain the growing environment’s stability for the growth of the plants. “The input costs for farmers have increased but most people are not willing to pay a proportional increase in the price of products which makes life very hard for people like us. We urge the public to support local food growers in as many ways as possible,” Prasanth explains.
