India’s food packaging box manufacturing sector is witnessing a surge in growth propelled by changes in consumer behaviour, growing demand for convenience and the anxieties surrounding sustainability. With the growth of the food delivery industry, the packaging startups are realizing huge opportunities for the supply of eco-friendly packaging solutions to cater to the market needs. With Indian consumers, particularly in urban areas, becoming more and more hygiene and environment conscious, the demand for biodegradable and recyclable packaging material like paperboard, cornstarch and bagasse based boxes are increasing. With that, the Indian government has also taken significant steps to support the initiative to encourage manufacturers to follow sustainable practices. The packaging startups have also innovated green alternatives in response to the ban on single use plastic. Consequently, there has been a lot of investment into advanced packaging techniques like molded pulp and plant based packaging in response to consumer and regulatory pressure to minimize environmental impact, many of which are startups. This trend is supported by other government initiatives that aid food processing industries with financial support and Production Linked Incentive Scheme for Food Processing that enhances manufacturing capacity. Food processing is a fast growing business that these programs drive and creates great demand for packaging, from farm to consumer, to handle the supply chain. To sustain its growth, the packaging industry is likely to continue to grow at an annual rate of more than 20 percent in India, which is a high growth sector due to its cross-sector application and integration of sustainable practices.
