Indian medical equipment market has been valued at $11 billion in 2022 and is projected to grow at 28 percent each year to touch $20 billion by 2030. The government’s initiatives and policies like ‘Make-in-India’ has been at promoting domestic manufacturing. However, the space faces a huge gap in the form infrastructure and support systems for the manufacturing hence medical devices as the industry heavily relies on imports.
The supportive infrastructure to the Indian healthcare system is dominated by foreign players that show a lack of medical device manufacturers with the capacity to bring in quality. Despite such challenges, there are a few like Indian Surgical Equipment Co, having gone through the grind, have successfully created an eco system for themselves to excel as manufacturers of quality medical devices.
ISE started as an importer and distributor of several international medical device companies in 1984. They were the first introduce many international brands in India such as Deknatel, Impra, Penlon, Schmitz , AMBU, Pilling, under the leader ship of Late Arvind Rajpal (1995), Indian Surgical Equipment (ISE) later set up their own manufacturing facility in 2012 to coin new inventions and produce medical devices with sole objective provide quality and affordability, indigenously.
Under the guidance of Sneha Rajpal and her son Abhinav Rajpal, ISE has used its own distribution network, created for international brands as a platform for marketing their indigenously products. ISE, with its own manufacturing unit and R&D facility have created a design-develop
capacity led by their CTO Eshan Omar allowing them innovative India ‘s first patient warming system, THERMA.

The determination to attenuate the prevalence of foreign companies in the domestic market has enthused ISE to a great extent and driven them to develop their own hypothermia prevention solution. Therma has now become a household name in the hypothermia prevention space. Therma is a forced air warming system that acts as one of the best choices for body temperature management. Being India’s only medical device company that manufactures patient warming system ISE capitalises on advanced technology and the innovative minds in its team to fulfil its goals for being an designer and developer of medical devices with a number new indigenous products in their pipe line in the near future.
Abhinav Rajpal, Director of Sale at ISE states, “Since we have our own R&D, the designs we are able to adapt to any sort of challenge given to us by any foreign competitor. We are certified with ISO 13485:2016, ie. ISE’s manufacturing operation is run as per the International standards.
Prospective Vision
ISE strives to modify their foundation to make ways for a future where the country’s health infrastructure will rise above its limitations in medical technology and make medical equipment more accessible to people. Hence, their further focus is to design-develop and manufacture, create an infrastructure to help others produce medical devices in India. “Being indigenous gives us a lot of advantage, to compete and to not only survive but to thrive and be the best in the country.
Hopefully, we will start to export our products as well in the next two to three years. The goal of ISE is to push its position as a designer, developer and manufacturer of medical devices in India where not only we make our own medical devices, but we also need a platform to help others make the medical devices because I have the capabilities in-house. Also, I would like ISE to compete at the world stage someday, with the medical devices that we manufacture. That would be the ultimate goal”, Rajpal further states.

ISE has achieved a name in the medical device market with an organised marketing and distribution ecosystem along with strong supplier network. They have been able to cater to organizations like AIIMS ( PAN INDIA ), PGI’S ( PAN Inida ) Indian Army, SGPGI, , Max Healthcare, Apollo Fortis and many more through their quality service and able partnerships. ISE has two offices in Delhi and Chennai with a workforce of 50 employees, recording an average growth rate of 15 percent for a decade.
