With the present day environmental challenges, the need of prudent and sustainable solutions for comprehensive development of demography is evident. The root cause for various challenges being faced by us today lies in the imbalance of the sustainability pentagon. Many of the challenges facing humankind, such as climate change, water scarcity, inequality and hunger, can only be resolved at a global level and by promoting sustainable development: a commitment to social progress, environmental balance and economic growth. Unless the five pillars of the sustainability pentagon, namely, Human Capital, Social Capital, Natural Capital, Physical Capital (Infrastructure) and Financial Capital are balanced, there will always be hurdles in the overall growth and development of the society. Understanding this, Global Scientific Inc (GSI), an independent engineering and consultancy engaged in the field of environmental sciences and environmental engineering was set up. “In 1995, we observed an exponentially growing trend in the use of natural resources against efforts to recycle or reuse. This drove us to the idea of setting up a firm which understands the fine balance between the pillars of sustainable development and that comprises of individuals (from fields of sciences, engineering and law) who can assist the clients to achieve the same,” says the founder.
GSI Group comprises of internationally experienced experts who understand the need of single desk services and solutions in the Indian market. The company in association with its multinational technology partners proposes single desk solutions to clients wherein the technological solutions are provided by GSI and its Multinational Associates and GSI operates and maintains the systems (at design standards and process guarantees) along with offering all related environmental engineering and consultancy services to the clients. GSI used artificial intelligence and machine learning based models to optimise the operations and maintenance of water and wastewater treatment and municipal solid waste management systems. Artificial Intelligence in the water infrastructure space allows for breakthrough improvements in process performance by identifying operating parameters, scheduling, correlations, and holistic actionable intelligence that is unpredictable by conventional tools. Advanced analytics allows operators, managers, and owners to reactively manage and improve their process, while proactively predicting and preventing unnecessary plant upsets and spikes in costs. "Utilising advanced data technologies and modelling methodologies, in addition to decades of domain expertise, we are able to comprehend and analyse operational data to provide actionable insights."
Machine learning processes plant data, along with advanced modelling techniques to provide actionable insights that help prevent plant upsets, enhance component health, identify operational anomalies, and improve overall plant performance. The cloud-based tools provide intelligent water systems to the wastewater sector. Wastewater utilities often collect data from multiple sources, whether it is from the lab, the field, or the multiple sensors installed for plant automation and monitoring. "We streamline the use of existing data sources and conduct advanced analytics in real-time for decision support and plant optimisation."
GSI’s single desk solutions offering to its clients comprises of turnkey water and wastewater treatment and recycling solutions, lean six sigma based operations and maintenance services through which it guarantees the monthly operational expenditure to the clients, feasibility studies wherein it charts the economic, financial, technical, schedule, resource, legal and operational feasibility of a proposed project, Design-Build-Operate and Finance its projects. While it takes the complete responsibility for financing, design engineering, construction, installation, and operations, clients get the liberty to pay on a monthly basis or a per litre basis charge. With the help of a robust in-house team, GSI offers precise and accurate responses to clients’ queries each time. “As majority of the works related to environmental pollution control engineering and compliances are handled at a single desk, our clients save significant amount of, me and resources,” she informs.
An Edge Over Others
Over the past 23 years, we have witnessed a significant change in the landscape of environmental consulting and pollution control engineering. From being a compliance oriented industry in the 90s wherein the clients would execute projects to meet the basic minimum regulatory compliance requirements, to developing into an eco-conscious approach in the 2000s where the clients would consider wastewater treatment and solid waste management in a manner that helps the company’s brand image and marketing strategies, to the present times wherein the clients are thoroughly focused on optimised use of resources and ensuring sustainable planning and operations we have clearly seen the DEMAND v/s SUPPLY for NATURAL RESOURCES like air, water and soil – change the landscape of our industry. The increased demand for environmental engineering and consultancy services is directly proportional to the consistently increasing gap between demand and supply of basic natural resources. The challenges are widespread. We are usually subjected to difficult questions of striking the right balance between extent of pollution control engineering and the commercials associated with it. Each client has a unique set of challenges and needs to be provided a customised package of sustainable solutions. Our team comprises of technical experts with vast international experience. The experts engaged in marketing and/or financing a project are the same people who are engaged in design engineering, execution, installation, commissioning and operations and maintenance. We have made this possible with the help of machine learning and artificial intelligence-based solutions which our associates have developed. “With this, we are able to bridge a gap between design engineering of a project and its operations and maintenance. This to us is the most unique feature that we offer,” she mentions.

Moreover, it is compulsory for GSI employees to spend at least one hour in the office researching about a new technological solution or ways and methods by which they can improve the services. It is also mandatory for them to submit a monthly report on the time and efforts they have invested in research. “The benefits of these practices are directly yielded by our clients. As majority of the time is spent in order to understand the nature of the problem, studying the permutations and combinations possible for proposing a solution and analysing all the needs/demands of all the stakeholders to the proposed project (including the pollution control boards, who are regulatory stakeholders to all the projects), the services and solutions that we propose are both efficient and cost effective,” she further adds.
Over the past 20 years, GSI has witnessed a significant change in the landscape of environmental consulting and pollution control engineering. This change is driven by the availability of natural resources like fresh air and potable water and the growing demand supply gap
The Milestones
After we started in 1998, our operations grew to 8 Indian states by 2000. By 2010, GSI was operating large scale sewage and water treatment plants in more than 10 Indian States and was also engaged in operations and maintenance of the water supply network and sewer networks. By 2000, GSI had the experience of operating numerous wastewater treatment plants from 10 KLPD capacity to 300,000 KLPD capacity and operate and maintain water and sewer networks for cities with population of 100,000 to 5,000,000 and had grown into a family of 500+ engineers/science graduates/diploma awardees. In 2013, GSI began its expansion in North India and North-East India and in 2016 we began our expansion in Middle East Asia and West Africa. Today, our group is operating one of the largest common effluent treatment plants in India, has a presence in over 18 Indian States and/or UTs and are engaged in designing, building and financing water treatment and supply systems in Africa and North Americas, designing, building and financing wastewater treatment and municipal solid waste management Systems in India.
“We are venturing into developing sustainable industrial ecosystems which off-burden the industries from all pollution control system operations and compliance reporting”
What Lies Ahead
Narrating the future roadmap, she says, “We understand a simple concept: When we devote our complete focus and attention to the task which we are good at, the outcomes are always better. Today, majority of our industries have to devote their time and resources in ensuring pollution control. This divides their focus from their core competency. Hence, we are venturing into developing sustainable industrial ecosystems which off-burden the industries from all pollution control system operations and compliance reporting and offers all the required resources and services to the industries for a fixed cost. Our sustainable industrial ecosystems are focused on Supply of potable and recycled process water, steam (generated by using green fuel) and heated thermic oil (generated by using green fuel) to the industries from a centralised system at a fixed tariff and offering other industry support infrastructure along, to help the industries maintain their focus on their core competency. This is our future goal – to make off-burden the industries from all pollution control system operations and related efforts and to provide them with clean, sustainable and cost effective water and wastewater treatment, solid waste management and air pollution control and management solutions at a fixed cost on a long-term basis.”
