The industrial safety market is projected to grow from USD 6.3 billion in 2022 to USD 8.8 billion by 2027 according to a report published by Markets and Markets. Development of innovative technologies dedicated to specific operations has taken this sector a new point of view. However, the major challenges can be termed as limited awareness on Process Safety, lack of visibility of returns (ROI) for investment in Process Safety and combined factors of cheaper consulting preferred in spite of being low on quality too. When we say limited awareness, while for some of the companies, Safety is limited to mitigation (such as fire fighting and PPEs), most of the companies will strive for a tick in the box on legal compliance. FET Solutions from Delhi believes that the market size will grow and the workplace will become safer only when personnel in responsible positions are aware about Process Safety and its requirement / applicability in the Process Industry.
The company is always open to participate in open training programs, online trainings, webinars and customized training programs. In last 2 years, the company was involved in trainings in association with organizations like CII, Factory Inspectorate in Andhra Pradesh, INPSC, Iconex, Council of EHS Professionals, Mattcor, Tata Chemicals and also has its own open webinars. “FET Solutions believes in ‘Safety with confidence’ which means that our clients can use our reports in improving their Process Safety Management. Hence, we attempt to arrange for a briefing session after submission of our reports, to explain what is done, how it is done, how to interpret results and how to utilize that in safe design & operations of the facility”, states Jitendra Kumar, Director, FET Solutions.
Eyes on Excellence
Jitendra is a B. Tech in Chemical Engineering from IIT Delhi and is working in the field of Process Safety for more than 30 years now. He has experience of working with companies like TNO, Netherlands, ERM, Punj Lloyd, Cairn, Germanischer Lloyd and Dekra. According to him, the client organizations do manage the operations, and ideally speaking should be able to manage their Process Safety aspects as well. This would leave the highly specialized areas for safety consulting companies. Unfortunately, it does not happen due to one or more of the numerous reasons. This could be lack of awareness, lack of understanding of such long term requirements or lack of ownership on Process Safety aspects. So, most of the time the client organizations approach Process Safety as isolated studies, usually carried out by different organizations (possibly due to L1 approach). Drawback of such an approach is that there is no integration between the studies, some areas might be well covered by some other areas may be missed out, the close out does not happen properly etc.
FET Solutions’ approach is focused primarily on composite PSM which starts with a detailed Gap Assessment. This would identify the possible improvements with their risk potentials and urgency of completion. This can then lead to preparation of an implementation plan.
This lists the measurable and specific tasks which will reduce the overall risk at the client site. This provides doable and specific actions and these actions can also be tracked very effectively. Overall, this approach is very cost effective and supports strongly on safety management. “We believe that we have a lot to do, hereby, in the last couple of years we have been strengthening our technical team and capabilities. With a strong start in first year and almost 80% growth in second year, it’s a long way for us to go. The focus is on making a strong and effective contribution for improving the Process Safety in Indian and global industry”, says Jitendra.
The company’s services are focused on Process Safety Management for the process industry which includes numerous sectors such as Pharmaceuticals, Bulk & Fine Chemicals, Agrochemicals, Oil & Gas (onshore and offshore), Petrochemicals, Fertilizers, Food, Engineering, Metallurgy, Cosmetics and others. The services include Process Safety Management (gap assessment and implementation), Risk Assessment and management, Health & Safety Management, Human factors and trainings on these aspects. These include
HAZID, HAZOP, QRA, FERA, Radiation & Dispersion, MCA, SIL, LOPA, Vent sizing, Chemical Reaction Hazards, Dust Hazards, Electrostatics, Hazardous Area Classification, F&G mapping, Fire fighting system adequacy and design, RAM and Accident Investigation amongst others.
The Mechanical Integrity (MI) service portfolio includes all equipment/assets used to produce products made from specific quantities of defined hazardous materials on the list covered by the PSM standard. System examples include fixed equipment such as pressure vessels and storage tanks, piping systems and associated hardware (valves, fittings, etc.), relief devices, vent hardware and emergency shutdown/control systems. Rotating equipment / assets, such as pumps, blowers, fans, and compressors that may be used to move hazardous materials within these systems are also included. In many cases, this means that all equipment within the boundaries of a facility is subject to the standard.
Growth Story and Future Endeavours
FET Solutions was launched in May 2020, and acquired ISO:9001 (2015) certification in July 2020. Soon, it was certified as a recognized Startup by Department for promotion of Industry & Internal Trade (DIPP), Ministry of Commerce & Industry (Govt of India). This followed MSME certification in the same month. With the lockdowns all across country and lacuna related to non-standard operations and close down of industries handling hazardous chemicals, unsafe conditions and accidents followed. This worked as a wake-up call for the industry and FET Solutions stretched itself into finding high quality solutions, going beyond just carrying out studies and printing reports. A lot of solutions were worked out and the industry took note of it. This led to more and more work flowing in and a lot of night outs for the team. Since the launch, FET Solutions has worked for 70 clients, completing 180+ projects in 2 years. The wings have spread from Delhi to Hyderabad, to Jakarta (Indonesia) and to Vancouver (Canada). The completed projects include locations in India, Indonesia, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Australia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Kenya and as far as Mexico.
FET Solutions was launched with the vision of being a dependable Global organization creating Process Safety awareness even at shop floor level. While this is an ambitious target, we are committed to make a difference in the Indian industry. FET Solutions is growing fast, still ensuring high level of quality. It is investing on its capabilities and technical competence so as to handle a lot more incoming work. Core of the team has developed the standard procedures for various studies and internal trainings are carried out. This is being done to ensure and maintain good quality standards all across the organization. “We have developed Procedures on each element of Process Safety Management (PSM) and supported numerous clients on PSM gap assessment and the implementation of the same.
When I Started My Career In 1992 With TNO Netherlands, Process Safety Was A Term Unknown To Almost All. In The Initial Days, It Was Confined To Oil & Gas And Fertilizer Sectors Which Meant Limited Awareness. It’s Heartening To See The Growing Awareness And Compliance. However, We Still Have A Long Way To Go
FET Solutions is targeting to be a dependable Global organization creating Process Safety awareness even at shop floor level. To achieve this, we provide International quality of Safety consulting solutions, at affordable prices thereby increasing the penetration of process safety. While we are doing our technical contribution, we try and ensure Integrity, quality and respect for all”, concludes the Director.
