Indian logistics Industry is evolving rapidly and continues to play an important role in driving economic growth by employing over 22 million people today. Although there are challenges that affect the industry, the pandemic has been a catalyst to drive evolution of this industry. As the old saying goes “every crisis is an opportunity”. The logistics industry has been the fastest to recover after the lock down was lifted. The Third-Party Logistics industry in India is expected to grow at a CAGR of at least 10% till 2024 as per industry experts.
While the changing economic scenario is accelerating growth, almost 80% of this sector is largely fragmented, unorganized and reluctant to change. It has been a learning curve for Caper as well. After 28 years in the service industry, Caper has been able to adapt itself and build its expertise in the industry to arrive at a position in the better 20% of the organized players.
There is an urgent need for bringing an integrating force in the industry and this is where companies like Caper India are playing a major role. Satish Kundapur, Managing Director, says, “At Caper we embrace change wholeheartedly. It is this unwavering desire to keep learning that has helped us grow from a single office to over 100+ warehousing facilities across the country”.
Strengthening innovation capabilities
Customer preferences are shifting-they have begun to view logistics not only as a cost center but also as a differentiator. They look to partner with players who are more willing to invest in supply chain digitization. Riding the wave of transformation, Caper has adapted to the new business environment and has shifted most of their operations to the digital platform. Not only does Caper provides real time visibility of shipments to its customers, but has integrated its systems with the customers systems to ensure seamless flow of information. This, undoubtedly, empowers Caper customers to take faster and well informed supply chain decisions.
In the post covid world, e-commerce is here to stay. In the e-commerce sector, logistics is divided
between captive and third-party logistics (3PL). The overall e-commerce shipments has grown from about 800 million shipments in 2018 to over 1,300 million shipments last year, and is expected to grow over 5,000 million by 2025 as per industry experts. Caper is expanding its focus to increase its e-commerce solutions to the B2B space as market place for bulk procurements of promotional items. It is also looking to cover e-commerce fulfillment from customer web-stores and drop ship-stores.
Transition from Service Provider to Total Logistic Solution Partner
Logistics companies need to move from merely proving warehousing or transportation services. This is one of the primary factors that differentiate Caper from the other players in the industry. Caper not only provides excellent services but also provides effective logistic solutions to their clients. “At Caper, we partner with our customers to analyze their data, generate insights and then provide them with customized solutions. This is a plus point where we gain an extra advantage. We become thought partners to our customers.” says Satish.
The Caper team has built deep supply chain expertise, the ability to do short pilots to demonstrate the benefit to its customers, and pricing options to provide the most cost-effective solution to its customers.
With existing customers as well, Caper follows the continuous improvement approach to spot inefficiencies. It has been able to develop this skill through rigor in operation performance and daily work management. Caper has partnered with its customer to optimize their supply chain through network redesign, warehouse consolidation, better route optimization to improve operational efficiency and productivity. Even the key result areas (KRAs) of the operations team have weightage for customer service on par with operational excellence. This motivates them to don the problem solving hat rather than just perform routine activities.
