Although the British introduced the industrial capabilities in India, enterprising Indians found this very conducive and started their own industries. However, the excessive cost of importing raw materials and transport of the same, left little room for any other investment on the establishment. Consequently, the Indian entrepreneurs went to the source of raw materials and acquired some machinery and built structures around the machines just to house the machines. But unfortunately, no thought process was involved in the building of these structures. This continued till the world war-II and up till India's independence from british rule.
By this time, several second-generation of industrialists had gotten their education from abroad and were prepared to come back to India and transform the face of industry. They had realized the importance of proper planning and thus collaboration and modernism began. With the economic liberalisation, a new era started and a sense of participation at the global level was initiated. The 90s have witnessed this third phase in industrial architecture in India.
Fast forward to this day, Industrial architecture in India is booming at a rapid rate due to high demand owning to increased growth rate of the Industrial segment. Ever growing internal consumption, cheap labor, and upbeat economy, are few of the important factors leading to the massive industrial growth in India. This has led to the requirement for modern state-of-the-art, functional Industrial buildings, leading to an increased demand for Architects who can design them.
Moreover, heightened general awareness, globalization and foreign collaborations, have created the demand for Industrial Architects who can design global level precision infrastructure to meet the demand of Industry. Commenting on the emerging market, scope of, and expectations from, exceptional architects in the industry segment, the Co-Founder of ANMA Architects, Ar. Anuj Vasudeva says, "Industrial buildings are catering to high investment projects with precision engineering processes.
Hence, it requires specialised skill sets in designing them leading to a niche market for Architects who are experienced in such works. So a major part of delivering this is to understand the process requirement, budget constraints and most importantly project timelines. It also entails in-depth study of machine requirements, serviceability, environmental impacts and expansion factors".
