Amid protests by employees opposing the privatisation of electricity distribution companies (discoms) in Uttar Pradesh, the state power corporation has issued a tender seeking consultants and transaction advisers to facilitate public-private partnerships (PPP) or privatisation of two discoms. The move aims to address the financial struggles of Dakshinanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Ltd and Purvanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Ltd.
“Our focus is to bring in efficiency and better service,” an official from Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation stated, highlighting the significant losses incurred by these discoms. The official also clarified that the planned model is likely to involve a public-private partnership, although the shareholding structure will be decided after receiving the consultant's report.
The state government’s decision is driven by the goal of reducing the losses of these discoms while improving their efficiency and service quality. The initiative reflects an effort to uplift the performance of these entities and address ongoing challenges in electricity distribution across the state.
