ONGC Tripura Power Company Ltd. has agreed to invest Rs 2,000 crore in the development of a battery energy storage facility in Assam. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed in Guwahati with the Assam Power Distribution Firm Limited (APDCL) "to construct battery energy storage system projects of capacity up to 250 MW / 500 MWh in Assam by forming a joint venture company," it said. The
statement continued without providing a timeline, "An investment of Rs 2,000 crore will be made in the state for building the project. Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), gas company GAIL (India) Ltd, the government of Tripura, and India Infrastructure Fund-II are partners in the joint venture known as OTPC. It is the owner and operator of a 726 MW gas-powered power plant that meets 25% of the energy needs of the seven north-eastern states. Highlighting the benefits of the project, OTPC managing director Sanil C Namboodiripad said that the project will help the state in improving power availability during peak load hours, improving integration of renewable energy generation with the electricity grid and enhancing grid reliability.
"OTPC, Assam's dependable energy supplier since 2014, is eager to assist Assam in its move toward a decarbonized energy mix. The energy storage project would result in numerous employment opportunities, a boost for small businesses in the area, greater use of green energy, a reduction in carbon emissions, and general socioeconomic development in Assam ".
