In a significant energy transition movement within the defense sector, NTPC signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Indian Army to generate 200 kW of Renewable Energy Round-the-Clock (RE-RTC) power from a solar-hydrogen-based microgrid in Chushul Ladakh. On Monday, a new 25-year power supply agreement was established that endorses renewable energy solutions at elevated altitudes.
The agreement was finalized by DMR Panda, CGM of NTPC-Hydrogen, and Aditya Harshey, Brigadier and Chief Engineer (Indian Army) of Leh. South Camp enables a green energy project at 4,400 meters to supplant existing diesel gensets for the Army, thereby decreasing fossil fuel dependency and eliminating 1,500 tons of CO2 emitted per year.
The project takes place in harsh surroundings because winter temperatures reach as low as -30°C while demonstrating Indian willingness to create clean energy sources for defense operations. The off-grid system with hydrogen capabilities will increase operational efficiency and resolve fuel supply problems that exist in distant Himalayan regions.
The operation of this advanced program will introduce a modernized era of both decarbonization and upgrade for India's military forces. The functioning of this advanced program will usher in a contemporary phase of decarbonization and enhancement for India's armed forces.
