Megha Engineering & Infrastructure Ltd. (MEIL) has made its entry into India’s nuclear energy landscape by securing a Rs 12,800 crore order from the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL). The order is set to be the largest ever awarded by NPCIL, and this is the first time to a private company, involving the construction of two 700 MW nuclear reactors, Kaiga Units 5 & 6, in Karnataka.
This milestone project was awarded after MEIL outdid the competitors in June 2024 through the Quality-cum-Cost-Based Selection (QCBS) method underlining the company’s competitive advantage and growing engineering capabilities. “This is the company’s first step into the nuclear energy sector,” stated MEIL, highlighting the strategic importance of the contract.
With the addition of nuclear power, MEIL further fortifies its footprint across various range of sectors, including power, water management, irrigation, hydrocarbons, oil and rigs, electric mobility and compressed gas distribution. The project Kaiga places MEIL as a forefront of India’s clean and sustainable energy transition enforcing the country’s intent for powered energy security.
The development furthermore shows a change towards increased private sector participation in India’s atomic energy mission, driven by innovation, infrastructure excellence, and long-term vision.
