India's energy sector is heading in a strong direction. JSW Energy signed a Power Purchase Agreement with the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited to build a 1,600 MW (2x800 MW) super/ultra-supercritical thermal power plant. The project has been JSW Energy's largest greenfield capacity addition to date and is expected to play a key role in supporting the region's energy infrastructure.
The thermal power plant to be built in Salboni, West Bengal, is to be commissioned in the span of five years. It will run on domestic coal allocated under the SHAKTI B policy, assuring consistent and economic power supply. The long-term, 25-year PPA will provide continued support both for JSW Energy and the power distribution system in the state, strengthening energy security and supporting industrial growth.
Also, JSW Energy has another milestone: the commissioning of Unit 2 of the 2x350 MW Utkal Thermal Power Plant. The commissioning is not a tad late, as the PS-generating energy through a merchant market and bilateral agreements will happen during the country's increasing energy demand.
With these projects, JSW Energy, part of the $24 billion JSW Group, is strengthening its hold on power, helping India meet its energy demand and spurring economic development.
