With an emphasis on maritime decarbonization and digitization, India and Singapore have signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) to establish a Green and Digital Shipping Corridor (GDSC). The project aims to support the shipping industry's adoption of digital solutions and zero or nearly zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emission technology, maintaining a strong push for sustainable marine trade.
Joint Secretary R Lakshmanan of India's Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways (MoPSW) and Chief Executive Teo Eng Dinh of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore both signed the LoI. Sarbananda Sonowal, India's Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, and Senior Minister of State Amy Khor witnessed the signing.
Leading Singapore's high-level marine board, Sonowal, emphasized that this plan will strengthen the two countries' "Comprehensive Strategic Partnership" and increase maritime cooperation. More than 28 participants from the energy, finance, and maritime industries have been added to the GDSC scheme since 2022. Khor highlighted, "These initiatives reaffirm Singapore's commitment to working with like-minded partners to advance maritime digital innovation and decarbonization."
As information technology advances, India could emerge as a major force in the production and export of green marine fuel. Notable outcomes in maritime sustainability and innovation are anticipated from this partnership, with Singapore serving as a key transshipment and bunkering hub.
