Compared to the same month last year, India's electricity consumption increased by more than 16% to 151.66 billion units (BU) in August of this year. Due to the extremely humid weather, excessive use of appliances like air conditioners and coolers was the main cause of the increase in electricity consumption.
Government statistics show that in August 2022, power consumption increased to 130.39 billion units (BU) from 127.88 BU in August 2021. In August 2023, the peak power demand reached 236.59 GW. In contrast to this, the peak power supply was substantially lower in August 2022 and August 2021, at 195.22 GW and 196.27 GW, respectively.
The country's electricity demand was predicted by the power ministry to reach 229 GW in the summer. Due to unusually heavy rainfall, the demand in April through July of this year did not reach the anticipated level. Although it was 208.95 GW in July, the peak supply had reached a new high of 223.29 GW in June.
