The India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) indicates that electric vehicle deployment in India will reach 28 million functioning units during 2030. The increase results from increasing customer needs, official support, and a focus on building better recharging systems.
Total electric vehicle sales in India reached 4.1 million units during the fiscal year ending 2023-2024. According to the IESA report, market analytics indicate that 83% of future EV sales will be two-wheelers, while four-wheelers will make up 10%, and trucks, alongside buses and three-wheelers, will total 7%.
"India has witnessed a substantial rise in electricity consumption, reaching 1,543 TWh in 2023-24 (7% increase over last year)," said Vinayak Walimbe, Managing Director at Customized Energy Solutions Pvt Ltd India, and President (Interim), IESA. The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) reports that public charging infrastructure utilized 465 GWh of electricity during April-October 2024, exceeding 204 GWh consumption during 2022-2023.
According to IESA projections, the amount of energy needed for EV charging will reach 4,000 GWh in FY 2024-2025, followed by possible growth up to 38 TWh by FY 2032 as the peak power demand reaches 366.4 GW. India requires that its total power generation capacity expand to a goal of 900 GW by 2032 from its existing level of 466 GW in January 2025, with renewable energy making up 500 GW of this total.
