The Indian government has approved Rs 10,601 crore for the establishment of the Brownfield Ammonia-Urea complex, Namrup IV Fertilizer Plant, with an annual production capacity of 12.7 Lakh Metric Tonnes (LMT). This tactical initiative seeks to tackle the increasing need for fertilizers, boost self-reliance, and decrease reliance on imports within India’s agricultural industry.
Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways and Dibrugarh MP Sarbananda Sonowal welcomed the decision, stating, “I express my heartfelt gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji and Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers JP Nadda ji on behalf of the people of Assam and the entire Northeast for approving the long-pending Namrup IV fertilizer Plant. This landmark project will not only strengthen fertilizer security in the region but also significantly boost industrial growth, agriculture, and the socio-economic well-being of our farmers.”
The plant will be developed within the 349-hectare complex of Brahmaputra Valley Fertilizer Corporation Limited (BVFCL), utilizing 172 hectares. It will require 2.35 MMSCMD of natural gas, with 1.73 MMSCMD sourced from the National Gas Grid. The project will generate 460 direct and 1,500 indirect jobs.
Sonowal further added, “This project is vital for fertilizer security in the North-East. Furthering the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji, this plant will be a shot in the arm for the Northeast to become the engine of growth towards our journey into becoming the ‘Viksit Bharat’.”
Scheduled for completion within 48 months, Namrup IV will reinforce India’s fertilizer production while creating export opportunities to neighboring markets like Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Bhutan.
