Coal production grew by 16 per cent touching 698 million tonnes during April-January period of the current fiscal, against 601 million tonnes production recorded during the corresponding period of last year.
Over the aforementioned period, Coal India Limited's production increased by 15.23 to 550.93
million tonnes compared to 478.12 million tonnes reported during the same period last year, according to sources in the coal ministry. In the face of a substantial growth in coal demand, which resulted from an ongoing increase in power consumption, the country's increased domestic coal production has greatly assisted in reducing imports.
The aim set by the coal ministry is 1.31 billion tonnes for 2024–2025, with 1.5 billion tonnes expected by 2029–2030.
The ministry has been actively collaborating with numerous state governments and federal agencies to open new coal mines and increase coal production in the mines that are already up and running.
As a result, production from captive and commercial coal mines grew to 93.22 million tonnes during the months of April and January of 22 and 23, up from 71.31 million tonnes during the same period of 2021 and 22, representing an increase of more than 30%.
