The Indian steel industry stands to receive significant growth after Steel Minister HD Kumaraswamy declared plans to invest ₹20,000 crore in expanding Bokaro Steel Plant's capacity. Under Atmanirbhar Bharat, the Bokaro Steel Plant increased production capacity from 5.25 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 7.55 MTPA.
"This expansion is a testament to India's commitment to self-reliance in steel production and aligns with Hon'ble PM Narendra Modi's vision of a 300 MTPA steel industry by 2030. The infusion of capital and technological advancements will bolster the steel sector and contribute significantly to India's economic growth," an official statement said.
The project encompasses the construction of fresh infrastructure, including a 4500 cubic meter blast furnace with thin slab casting and direct rolling systems, the expansion of a stamp-charged coke oven battery facility, and an existing calcining plant and sinter plant. New high-tech systems form part of an operations transformation focusing on efficiency improvements. This project strives to create 10,000 indirect and 2,500 permanent positions, establishing job opportunities across Jharkhand.
During the visit, the minister discussed the plant's green energy programs involving floating photovoltaic systems, which produce 30 MW and 20 MW generated by solar parks on land. Modernization activities support India's sustainable industrial development path and its status as a world leader in steel production.
