India will be amongst the League of Nations that uses the cleanest petrol and diesel in the world starting from April 1. A major leap from using Euro-IV to Euro-VI compliant fuels is most likely going to happen in the country. This happens to be one of the breakthroughs by the industry which is hasn’t still been adopted by major economies around the globe. The country is expected to have a lower pollution rate owing to the usage of more refined and advanced quality fuels.
The formulation of petrol and diesel containing ultra low sulphur content BS-VI was under process for the last three years by the Indian Oil Corp
(IOC) as has been mentioned by Sanjiv Singh, Chairman, IOC. The production of these fuels was accomplished by the end of 2019 and April 1, 2020 will mark the beginning of the usage of Euro-VI grade compliant
petrol and diesel in the country. All the oil companies in India have already undertaken the most primary task of replacing every drop of old fuel with the new one which is most likely to be over before April. "We are absolutely on track for supplying BS-VI fuel from April 1. Almost all refineries have begun supplying BS-VI fuel and the same has reached storage depots across the country," he said.
Sanjiv Singh also informed that the new fuels have already been loaded into trucks and are en route to their destinations for the fulfilment of the distribution process. The distribution will not take more a few weeks time. “ We are 100 per cent confident that fuel that will flow from nozzles at all the petrol pumps in the country on April 1 will be BS-VI emission compliant fuel”, he said. The earlier transformation from Euro-III equivalent fuel to BS-IV took our country seven years but the leap to BS-VI has taken only three years which is a great achievement in itself.
A capital of 35,000 Crore was invested to upgrade the machinery that could produce low sulphur fuel by the state owned oil refineries. This was after the spending of 60,000 Crore that was done by the same during the earlier transformations.
