Hospital Acquired Infections (HAIs) are infections that people may catch when they are receiving care in a hospital. All healthcare facilities should have infection prevention & control procedures and policies, and staff should take every precaution to avoid occurrence of HAI. Many types of infection can be picked up during healthcare including wound, bloodstream, urinary tract etc. If a person is admitted to a hospital, he/ she is at a risk of contracting Hospital Acquired Infection. This risk increases in case of patients who are more vulnerable such as premature babies, elderly people, and people with comorbidities.
Also, if a patient is on immunosuppressive drugs, there is an increased risk of contracting HAI. HAI comes at a huge cost to both, the patients as well as the hospital. HAI increases the length of stay of a patient by a significant fold and also burns a huge hole in the pockets of the patient. HAI attracts higher usage of antibiotics which can also result in increased complications in patient’s health as well as may give rise to MDR pathogens. HAI is equally bad for the hospital since the longer occupancy of a bed by a patient directly affects the effective number of patients that a hospital can serve to!
Bacteria, fungi, and viruses spread mainly through person-to-person contact, fomites or through infected surfaces, including medical instruments such as catheters, respiratory machines, and other hospital tools. In market, there are many companies that provide antimicrobial solutions, but they do not seem give 100% protection against all types of microorganisms. Often, these antimicrobial solutions come at high cost and not very efficient in preventing and controlling infections as mentioned by Doctors and Healthcare Staff.
Weinnovate Biosolutions Pvt. Ltd., a Start-up founded in 2016 in Pune aims to ensure zero infections during a hospital stay. They have developed a patented, proprietary technology, ‘NanoAgCide’ which is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial, colloidal silver nanoparticle solution. NanoAgCide is clinically tested to be highly effective in killing a range of viruses, including Norovirus – one of the toughest viruses to kill, fungi and bacteria, including MDR bacteria. NanoAg-Cide is an aqueous solution which can be formulated to give different antimicrobial products, including hand sanitizers, disinfectants, etc.
It is an eco-friendly solution with no special storage requirements. The company has been co-founded by Dr. Milind Choudhari, Dr.Anupama S. Engineer and Dr.Prasad Bhagat serving the dual purpose of Quality with Affordability. Weinnovate Biosolutions Pvt. Ltd. is an ISO 13485:2016 certified start-up working dedicatedly around Infection prevention and control, Infection diagnostics & healthcare solutions. “We develop and provide Quality and Technology without compromise,” says Dr. Milind Choudhari, Founder & CEO. They are a team of interdisciplinary pool of talent for solving challenging problems.
SilvoGuard Antimicrobial Foley Catheter: a Cutting-edge antimicrobial solution to prevent CAUTI
Around 25-30% of patients hospitalized at any time have a catheter inserted during their stay. Around 10% of such patients get a bacterial infection in their urinary tracts. This number goes up to 30-50% for patients admitted to ICU. There has also been a high incidence of UTIs in patients who require long-term catheterization. Urinary tract infections account for around 30 - 40 % of all Hospital associated infections globally of which 80% are due to indwelling catheters. Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infections (CAUTI) have an adverse effect on hospitals as well since there is revenue loss due to bed occupancy by same patient for more number of days and also the doctors cannot serve more number of patients. It is therefore of utmost importance to make these catheters antimicrobial in nature.
Weinnovate Biosolutions has developed SilvoGuard Antimicrobial Foley Catheter with the help of its patented, broad-spectrum colloidal silver nanoparticle solution. Weinnovate Biosolutions are the unsung heroes around Infection prevention and control, advocating “Prevention is better than cure”. They are constantly spinning out cutting-edge antimicrobial products/ technologies which reduce incidences of Hospital Acquired Infections (HAIs) and help save millions of lives and reduce the economic burden on patients borne due to longer hospitalization.
Weinnovate Biosolutions has a team of dedicated scientists and technologists, working in synergy to developing advanced healthcare solutions which are efficient, rapid, and affordable.
They have a wonderful set of experienced mentors including, medical doctors, business strategists, pre-clinical and clinical studies advisors, product building experts. Weinnovate Biosolutions is the recipient of prestigious Bio-technology Ignition Grant Award and Small Business Innovation Research initiative grant from Biotechnology Indus-try Research Assistance Council (BIR AC). Owing to success of the start-up it has been provided assistance from National Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Development Board (NSTEDB) Govt. of India. Weinnovate Biosolutions has also won the Healthcare accelerator competition organized by CIIE, IIM-Ahmedabad and is a cohort of CIIE.
