According cording to a recent report by Verified Market Research, the Global Chiral Chemicals market is anticipated to reach USD 133.2 billion by 2026, registering at a CAGR of 13.9 per cent during the forecast period. Chiral technology has observed significant growth in recent years, and the development of chiral chemicals have become faster and more cost-effective with the development of advanced manufacturing and analytical methods. The most significant increase in the application of chiral molecules (especially enantiomers) has been in the development of new drugs by the pharmaceutical industry. This is substantiated by the fact that majority of drugs approved by the US FDA and other regulatory bodies around the world, in recent times, are chiral molecules. For example, eleven out of twenty-one antiepileptic drugs (AED’s)introduced into the global market between 1989and 2021, are chiral molecules. Nine of these are single isomers.
This is primarily because individual enantiomers (enantiopure drugs) exhibit marked differences in pharmacodynamic, pharmacokinetic, and toxicological properties compared to their racemic or non-chiral analogues via (a) an improved therapeutic index through increased potency and selectivity and decreased side-effects; (b) a faster onset of action; (c) a reduced propensity for drug-drug interactions, and (e) a lower dosage requirement. For example, in the figure below, (R,R) and (S,S) Ethambutol are diastereomers (or non-super imposable mirror images) of each other. (R,R)-Ethambutol causes blindness, whereas (S,S)-Ethambutol can be used to treat tuberculosis. Moreover, advances in industrial chemical processes, and the US FDA policy statement of 1992, provide additional incentives to develop enantiopure drugs even though they were initially marketed as a racemate. Apparently, images matter! mirror images, even more!
