The business ecosystem is a chain of interdependencies throughout the sectors. Quality packaging material is one of the primary subjects that a consumer product manufacturer should look upon as a lot depends on the final packaging of the material. Especially, in case of long-distance logistics, packaging material of a product ensures its safe journey from one destination to another. Coated paperboards and kraft paper are the two of the packaging materials that is hugely used by consumer product manufacturing companies.
Orchid Laminates started with the production of laminate with a capacity of 6 million square meters in November, 2011 followed by coated paperboard with a production capacity of 75,000 tons per annum in December, 2012 and Kraft Paper with a production of 110,000 tons per annum in January 2020.The manufacturing facilities are recycled fibre based. The company has been having a robust growth of 11- 12% per annum though the packaging paper industry has been growing at 7% per annum.
Product Quality Guaranteed
Orchid has a good QCS and DCS which ensures consistent and quality product and has kept the company ahead of its competitors. Sourcing of raw material like recycled fibre remains a
challenge to all RCF paper mills but the company has been able to maintain a steady supply and keep its costs down by having an optimum mix from various international sources as well as strong domestic sources.
Another challenge faced by paper mills is the handling of waste discharge, Orchid has several systems in place such as a well-functioning ESP which has ensured discharge below 50ppm/ nm3 compared to PCB norms of 150 PPM, Robust ETP which has ensured zero liquid discharge in the past several years and an efficient plastic waste disposal system.
“Clients always expect a lower cost as they are under continuous price pressure from their end customers, along with timely delivery, consistency and quality. Orchid Laminates has been able to meet those expectations by keeping its conversion cost low due to 100% capacity utilisation, low financial cost due to good financial discipline and procurement of raw materials at a cost lower than competitors.” states Pramod Tantia, Managing Director, Orchid Laminates.

Timely delivery is ensured as it is located in a modern industrial area and within close proximity to customers. Consistent quality, modern machineries with well-equipped lab and QCS leads to good runnability of paper at customers end.
The above has resulted in the company having a dominant role in southern India. “Coated paper board has been our strength and excellent print results combined with high brightness and smooth top surface has been our hallmark. The kraft plant is equipped to produce high RCT paper. The anaerobic reactor is under trial which on commissioning will ensure odour free paper”, says Pramod.
Future Vision
The company will continue to grow as it continues to add to its existing capacities and is working on other green field projects. The company is also adding up a new vertical in green energy generation which should not only meet its 100 percent energy requirement but would also be engaged in third party supplies and thereby keep its processing costs down. “This would help the company in meeting its future challenges.” Concludes Pramod.
