Seed companies play a crucial role in the agricultural sector, serving as crucial contributors to global food production. The escalating demands for high-quality seeds, driven by a growing population and evolving agricultural practices, present both opportunities and challenges for these companies.
The demand for seeds is multi-faceted, ranging from traditional crop varieties to specialized hybrids engineered for improved yield, resilience, and nutritional content. The need for competent seed companies is evident, as they must navigate these challenges while simultaneously innovating to enhance seed quality, promote sustainable farming practices, and ensure food security.
Based out of Dindigul, Tamil Nadu, KR Agro Farm stands as a pivotal player in the agricultural landscape, especially in vegetable sectors particularly recognizing the importance of onions, a staple vegetable consumed daily across the globe. Understanding the surging demand for onions driven by a growing population, the FARM has strategically positioned itself to address this need by prioritizing the production of highquality onion seeds and has also taken up research activities on developing moringa varieties which of now getting prime importance in neutracetical industry.
Notably, in Tamil Nadu, the farm specializes in cultivating the unique and locally beloved Sambar Onion, scientifically known as Aggregatem Onion, distinguished by its multiple bulblets per plant which is presumed as ‘Queen of Kitchen’.
At the forefront of agricultural innovation, KR Agro Farm is actively engaged in pioneering Research and Development (R&D) activities aimed at enhancing seed production on their dedicated research farm. Collaborating closely with a proficient technical team, the farm consistently explores strategies to augment seed yield per unit area, leveraging the symbiotic relationship between crops and pollinators like honeybees. “By strategically incorporating bee-attracting plants and adopting organic practices, we have not only attracted beneficial pollinators but have also embraced seed production technologies developed by the Directorate of Onion and Garlic Research in Pune. This effort has resulted in a remarkable control over production costs while significantly boosting seed yield, achieving an impressive 2.5 to 3.0 quintals per acre,” informs Dr. Parameswaran K., Director of KR Agro Farm.
In their unwavering commitment to sustainable and responsible farming practices, KR Agro Farm is revolutionizing the vegetable landscape by bridging the gap between local traditions and modern scientific recommendations.
“Recognizing the prevalent use of excessive local fertilizers and frequent chemical applications by farmers, the farm's mission is to guide them towards adopting state-recommended practices by TNAU. By providing education on the right quantity and timing of fertilizer application, we aim to curtail unnecessary expenses for farmers and, more importantly, mitigate the risk of chemical-loaded crops that may contribute to health issues, including diseases like cancer and more", asserts Dr. Parameswaran.
KR Agro Farm envisions a future where continued advancements in technology & sustainable practices will foster economic efficiency for farmers
KR Agro Farm is charting a visionary path towards sustainable agriculture and farmer empowerment. With a commitment to excellence, the farm has proposed to establish an exclusive training center for Onions and Moringa, offering monthly programs to educate farmers on organic farming practices and the judicious use of agri-inputs in accordance with state university recommendations.
The training extends to research on organic pesticides and fertilizers, with the aim of disseminating cutting-edge technologies to local farmers. With a recent acquisition of 20 acres, KR Agro Farm is shortly will start to manufacture the organic onion powder, organic Moringa powder, organic Garlic powder, and other vegetable organic food products. Looking ahead, the firm envision the launch of an agro food company, emphasizing organic and sustainable practices and is committed to researching and developing droughtresistant onion varieties to ensure a sustainable yield and reduce dependency on imports.
