In 1947, seventeen-year-old J.M. Lapeyre co-invented the first industrial shrimp peeler, which would revolutionize the shrimp processing industry. Spurred by a massive demand for shrimp, J.M. Lapeyre wanted to move the shrimp peelers onto metal conveyor belts, but faced challenges such as rust and corrosion while moving the peeled shrimp on metal conveyor belts. He approached major rubber and steel conveyor belt manufacturers to produce a modular plastic belt, but was repeatedly told that it was not feasible.
Undeterred, J.M. Lapeyre went on to invent the first-ever modular plastic conveyor belt in 1970, leading to the foundation of Intralox in 1971. The company’s modular plastic belting solutions revolutionized the conveyor belt segment 50 years ago, as they helped industries overcome pressing challenges such as retensioning, tracking, and edge fraying leading to foreign material contamination.
In today’s industrial world, Intralox modular plastic conveyor belting is the standard technology across a wide variety of industries including food, tire, beverage, container, and more.
