The defense industry in India is entering a period of innovation, self-reliance, and growth. The ‘Make-in-India’ initiative has been at the forefront of changing this situation. The focus on self-reliance and the potential opportunity to become a defense exporting nation drive market growth, expansion, and innovation. With a strong talent pool of young, educated people embracing the innovative spirit, the defense industry is going to experience a significant boom in the economy. Founded in 1983 as a fabrication and machine shop, Mechano Engineering Company is involved in manufacturing significant-high precision components and equipment that go into power plants, steam turbines, space, defense, and others.
Customers expect reliability in quality, timely deliveries, and rapid development of new designs, while being economical and competitive. Mechano tackles it by constantly investing in more contemporary and immense infrastructure in combination with R&D efforts, allowing it to cater to some of the most extensive requirements in the defense sector. It started as a job-working company primarily servicing the needs of the large public sector companies that were the primary economic drivers of the nation in the early 80s. “Mechano is now a company that invests in internal research and development,
while simultaneously working with multiple organizations to develop prototypes and products for them”, speaks Sreedhar Ramakrishnan, CEO, Mechano Engineering Company.
Mechano Engineering Company has been a trusted partner in developing critical infrastructure for aerospace and defense for many years. One of the earliest was manufacturing the First Canister for Long-Range Missiles, and the most recent is the Cassette Structure (carrier) for MRSAM (Medium Range Surface to Air Missile). It has developed numerous jigs, assembly fixtures, ground support equipment, and in-flight components for HAL and ISRO. With advances in CNC machining and non-contact measuring systems, it can ensure the accuracy of individual members, reducing overall assembly time and still ensuring quality. Mechano is also upgrading its types of equipment to the latest Industry 4.0 specifications to remotely access and control the manufacturing process. “Quality has been built into the ethos of the company as it has been involved in critical infrastructure products since inception”, speaks Sreedhar.
Prioritizing Quality Over Profits
Mechano has a multidisciplinary team with experience in multiple energy, steel, aerospace, and defense sectors. Most of the senior staff at Mechano has been with the company for more than a decade, and their combined experience means that there is nothing in the manufacturing space that they cannot cater. The ability to produce high precision components of different sizes and work across a broad range of materials with a strong focus on quality and having certifications with various national and international standards differentiates the company from other players in the segment. As an ISO 9000-certified organization, Mechano has established quality control procedures and systems from the design stage to the delivery of the final product.

Mechano will continue to expand and lead the development of new products and projects and see a future where they would be in direct contact with the end-users of their products and develop these technologies with their requirements in mind. With a strong foundation, financially and technically, Mechano will continue to be a ‘One-Stop-Shop for Manufacturing Solutions’.
