As the most populated country in the world, India is the third-largest producer and consumer of electricity in the world today with an installed power capacity of 446.18 GW as of June 2024. This surge in power demand has been driven majorly by two aspects, namely rapid urbanization and increased mechanization of various industries, both of which are critical indications of a healthy and thriving economy. Keeping this in mind, the Indian government has not only allowed 100 percent FDI in the power sector but has also launched a flurry of schemes to augment electrification across the country, the latest one being the Prime Minister’s ‘Gati Shakti Master Plan’ which aims to enhance interstate power transmission system network of 220kV and above voltage levels by adding around 27,000 circuit km of transmission lines countrywide at an investment of around $1,027.5 billion.
