The Indian government has formed a panel for examining the possibility of bringing nutraceuticals under the ambit of the apex drug regulator CDSCO rather than the food regulator FSSAI for addressing regulatory challenges & promote consumer safety. At present, the FSSAI regulates the implementation of nutraceuticals & health supplements under the Food Safety and Standards Regulations, 2022.
The sources stated that challenges in uniform implementation and enforcement, interchangeable usage of the same nutrient or ingredient at various doses for pharma and nutraceutical use & overlap in phylactic as well as therapeutic usage along with disease risk reduction claims which were discussed with CDSCO officials in one of the recent meetings.
