The Tamil Nadu cabinet approved the Space Industrial Policy 2025 on Thursday. The policy aims to establish the state as a major player in the global space economy. The ambitious target is to attract investments worth ₹10,000 crore and generate 10,000 high-value jobs in manufacturing, space-tech services, and downstream applications.
Following the Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, Industries Minister T.R.B. Rajaa said the policy goes beyond manufacturing. “It will also open doors for startups, MSMEs and large players across the value chain,” he said.
According to Rajaa, the Tamil Nadu Space Policy is based on three fundamental pillars: attracting investment into the state’s space sector, generating high-value job opportunities for youth, and building a skilled and future-ready workforce in space technologies and services.
Other Indian states have also come up with their policies Karnataka, for instance, released the Draft Karnataka Space Technology Policy 2024-29 targeting a 5% capture of the global space technology market.
Tamil Nadu also intends to leverage the strategic advantage of the upcoming ISRO Launchpad at Kulasekarapattinam. As contained in the draft policy of the state for the year 2024, it is to create dedicated 'Space Bays' industrial clusters in Madurai, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, and Virudhunagar. These would host space-tech companies and start-ups with incentive packages tailored to contribute to the betterment of both nascent and established companies.
Additionally, the state plans to capitalize on its existing strengths in heavy engineering, precision manufacturing, and electronics industries considered crucial for the development of a robust space ecosystem.
