Union Minister Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma introduced three new programs under the Steel Research Technology Mission of India (SRTMI) to improve research and development (R&D) in steel production.
SRTMI is a collaborative project between the Ministry of Steel and the Indian steel industry. As part of this project, the minister introduced new R&D schemes and a web portal to encourage innovation and sustainability in the steel sector. The initiative took place at the accelerating R&D in the Indian Steel Sector event in Delhi. These initiatives, along with the SteelCollab web portal, will aid India to reach its goal of producing 300 million tonnes (MT) of steel by 2030, said Bhupathiraju. He also asserted the importance of advancing technologies and manufacturing steel equipment in the country.
India’s steel industry is distinctive, as almost 45% of production comes from the secondary steel sector, said Steel Secretary Sandeep Poundrik. He also expressed the need of research that particularly focuses on country’s specific requirements.
According to the statement, the three new initiatives, The Challenge Method, The Open Innovation Method, and the Start-up Accelerator program aims to accelerate advancement in the steel industry. The Challenge Method prioritizes on addressing key industry challenges of national importance. The Open Innovation Method motivates collaboration between universities, researchers, and industries to create new ideas and solutions. Meanwhile, the Start-up Accelerator program is developed to support initial stage startups in developing advanced steel technologies, nurturing growth and modernization in the sector.
