After all the speculation, Tesla has finally launched its manufacturing plant and R&D unit in India. To be opened in Bangalore, the Indian subsidiary of the carmaker has been named Tesla India Motors and Energy Private Ltd and Vaibhav Taneja, Venkatrangam Sreeram, and David Jon Feinstein have been named as directors, according to disclosures with the corporate affairs ministry.
In the past few months, it has been reported that Tesla was in talks with five state governments to commence operations in India. The governments of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu have had talks with the company who are also considering local partnerships.
The Karnataka government had proposed a list of locations, Tumkur being one, to Tesla for setting up its manufacturing facility. Earlier in 2020, Tesla's Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk hinted at the company entering India in 2021.
“We have been interacting with Tesla for the last few months and it is good news that they have decided to incorporate their company here. We have impressed upon them that Bengaluru is not only the technology capital but also the aerospace and space capital. For any kind of technology collaboration, it has the right kind of talent pool," Gaurav Gupta, principal secretary, commerce & industries of Karnataka said.
“How they want to enter and take it forward is left to their judgment. Hopefully, this will lead to sales office, research and further developments as necessary," he added.
Tesla’s likely entry into India comes at a time when the union and state governments have been encouraging higher adoption of green vehicle technologies to help bring down the carbon footprint.
Moreover, Elon Musk, who recently became the wealthiest individual in the world overtaking Amazon Inc. founder Jeff Bezos, also enjoys a cult-figure like status in India as he does abroad which has added to the growing demand for Tesla and its products.
