Commercial production at Odisha's Sapigen Biologix vaccine plant, the state's first of its kind, will begin in May, according to officials on Sunday. They said the plant at the Biotech Park in Andharua, near here, will be capable of producing 2.4 crore doses of various vaccines per day.
"At full capacity, this facility will be the biggest vaccine-producing plant in the country," the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) said in a statement.
It is expected to produce over 15 vaccines for various diseases, including cholera and malaria.
According to the CMO, the Rs 1,500 crore vaccine plant will directly employ 1,500 people, the majority of whom will be local recruits.
The vaccines produced in Bhubaneswar will be distributed to many parts of the world, it said.
On Sunday, V K Pandian, chairman of '5T' - technology-led transformative initiatives, visited the sub-units and spoke with management and employees. He urged all government agencies to assist with the plant's commissioning within the next three months.
