Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) is establishing new standards in electric vehicle (EV) production with the launch of its advanced facility at the Chakan plant. The new plant, a component of M&M’s strategic greenfield initiative, will accommodate more than 500 robots and entirely automated transfer systems in the Body Shop, all managed via an IoT-driven "Nerve Center" that offers real-time process insights and comprehensive traceability. This marks a significant advancement in Mahindra’s implementation of Industry 4.0 technologies, like Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) and Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs), to facilitate uninterrupted material flow across the production line.
The Chakan EV manufacturing hub, spanning 88,000 square meter, integrates world-class manufacturing processes and advanced automation for a high-performance, long-lasting battery production line. The plant operates with one of the world’s most compact battery manufacturing setups, utilizing patented processes and lean module assembly techniques. The cutting-edge plant also features a fully automated Press Shop, an AI-driven Body Shop, and one of India’s most sophisticated robotic Paint Shops to optimize quality and efficiency.
According to M&M, the facility boasts a patented pallet design for optimal insulation and geometric accuracy and hidden cell terminal welding for enhanced connectivity and robust performance. The battery assembly line includes multi-layered end-of-line testing that simulates real-world conditions, backed by real-time temperature monitoring and automated anomaly isolation for superior product quality.
Through this new facility, M&M further strengthens its pledge to sustainable, innovative, and gender-diverse manufacturing, emphasizing skill development and quality. The electric vehicle production centre thoroughly fuels renewable energy and promotes water positivity.
