The railways are set to reach complete electrification in the upcoming fiscal year and are making progress advancing in the adoption of renewable energy, union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Monday. During a virtual address at the MP Global Investors Summit (GIS) 2025 following the signing of a power purchase agreement with the state, Railways Minister Vaishnaw announced that the government aims to achieve net zero emissions for railways by 2030.
Regarding the utilization of renewable energy sources, the minister stated that a capacity of 1,500 MW or 1.5 GW has already been allocated for supply to the Railways to date.
"The 170 MW power purchase agreement (PPA) signed with Madhya Pradesh today is an important step in this direction," he added.
He mentioned that MP has been allocated a historic railway budget of Rs 14,745 crore for 2025-26.
Before 2014, the rate of railway line construction in MP was merely 29-30 km each year, he mentioned, noting that it has now risen to 223 km annually.
The minister also pointed out various recently approved rail initiatives in the state while providing updates on the status of the ongoing projects. Currently, an investment of Rs 1.04 lakh crore is being made in various railway projects related to Madhya Pradesh.
