The Indian Railways has reached an important milestone in FY25 by producing 7,134 coaches, marking a 9 percent increase from 6,541 coaches in the last fiscal year (FY24). In the last fiscal year, a particular focus was placed on non-AC coaches, resulting in the production of 4,601 coaches to serve the needs of the general public.
The Ministry of Railways reports that the annual average production of coaches increased from 3,300 during 2004-14 to 5,481 in 2014-24, totaling 54,809 coaches produced in the past decade. This increase highlights India's increasing focus on upgrading Railway infrastructure to accommodate rising passenger demand.
The Indian Railways operates three coach manufacturing facilities in India: the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu; the Rail Coach Factory (RCF) situated in Kapurthala, Punjab; and the Modern Coach Factory (MCF) based in Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh.
The Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, the leading passenger coach manufacturing unit of Indian Railways, exceeded its earlier production benchmarks for 2024-25, having produced 3,007 coaches, as reported by the ministry. The production of coaches in India has grown significantly over the years. From 2004 to 2014, Indian Railways produced fewer than 3,300 coaches on average each year.
