In a major stride for India’s sustainable construction and green manufacturing goals, the country has officially entered the green steel era with the delivery of its first ultra-low emission TMT bars to Epic Group’s upcoming net-zero facility in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. The collaboration brings together ARS Steel, fashion manufacturing giant Epic Group, and sustainability-tech innovator sentra.world.
This development marks a significant turning point in India’s transition to eco-friendly infrastructure and industrial practices. The Rs 377 crore facility, designed as a net-zero plant for energy and water usage, is set to cut its carbon footprint dramatically by using green steel in its core construction.
ARS Steel’s 550D grade TMT bars, manufactured with 98% recycled steel, renewable energy, and without fossil fuels, record an emission intensity of just 0.59 tCO₂ per tonne of finished steel — one of the lowest in the country.
“With a national average emission intensity around 2.5 tCO₂/tcs, ARS Steel has set a new benchmark by achieving an emission intensity of 0.59 tCO₂/tfs, making it 4X greener than average TMT bars and one of the lowest-emission steel producers in the country,” a joint statement.
India is also the first nation to officially define green steel ratings, and ARS’s product easily qualifies as 5-star rated. “Epic Group’s choice of ARS’s green steel has reduced the embodied emission of their building by approximately 20%, transitioning from the traditional blast furnace method to the cleaner electric route of steel production,” the statement added.
