Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Saturday announced the plans to create two electronics manufacturing clusters in Tamil Nadu, located at Pillaipakkam (Kancheepuram) and Manalur (Tiruvallur), involving a total investment of Rs 1,112 crore.
Addressing an event here, the minister mentioned that very large electronics manufacturing clusters would be established which would support Tamil Nadu’s ecosystem.
Department secretary S Krishnan told TOI that the projects involve establishing shared facilities like testing and calibration within the electronics manufacturing clusters 2.0 scheme, with the Union government covering 50% of the project expense or Rs 506 crore.
The EMC 2.0 scheme has been revealed for 10 locations in seven states, featuring two clusters in both Karnataka and Telangana.
Ashwini Vaishnaw said electronics had become the second largest exported goods overtaking many conventional items which have developed over decades. “This is made possible by the govt’s clear thinking and focused execution,” he said.
He encouraged the country's electronics firms to aim aspire to grow bigger like the largest international competitors.
Previously, speaking at the event, state industries minister T R B Raaja called on the minister to assist Tamil Nadu in establishing a rapid transportation network. He mentioned that electronics exports in the region have risen significantly.
