The government will soon issue bids for 10 gigawatts of battery energy storage projects. The action will enhance India's position in the emerging energy storage industry, an official announced.
"The ministry will soon come out with a 10 gigawatt RFP (request for proposal) for those who are working on the energy storage part of it for grid-scale energy storage systems...so that we have...indigenous capability for manufacturing of battery energy storage system compatible with advanced chemistry cells," Vijay Mittal, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Heavy Industries, mentioned.
The official was delivering a speech at the 'Summit on Lithium-Ion Batteries', held online by the industry association India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA).
The ministry is heading towards the indigenous production of chemistry cells in the nation as a part of the electric vehicle initiative. He specified that the goal is to reach net zero by 2070 and lower the dependence on imports of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, to address environmental concerns.
Mittal further mentioned that 40 gigawatt-hours out of 50 gigawatts have been allocated by the government to diverse original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) for making cutting-edge chemistry cells internally under the ACC-PLI scheme.
More than 300 leaders in the industry came together at the event to exchange about various topics such as research and development, production, creativity, materials, distribution, electric transportation, reusing, fixed energy storage, and more.
