On Monday, M K Stalin, the chief minister of Tamil Nadu, launched the first integrated greenfield plant of Godrej Consumer Products (GCPL) located on the OMR in Chengalpet. The Rs 515 crore facility at OneHub Chennai Park will produce various items, such as soaps, hair dyes, electric mosquito repellents, and air fresheners.
In his speech, Stalin said GCPL joins the list of several FMCG companies, including Britannia, Dabur and ITC, with production projects in the state.
“The foundation stone for the facility was laid during the Global Investors Meet (GIM) in Jan 2024, just five months after signing the MoU in Aug 2023. Within a year's time, the plant has been inaugurated. This is a classic example of how our govt executes a project diligently after signing an MoU," he said.
He highlighted that the consumer products market in Tamil Nadu has significant growth potential, adding that the sector is competitive and will continue to expand in the future. As one of the most urbanized states in the country, Tamil Nadu remains a key market for various companies.
“We are making strenuous efforts to reduce imports and enhance domestic production. Tamil Nadu, which is the gateway for investments in India, is also the best state for investments in southeast Asia," Stalin said.
The chief minister lauded the initiative to allocate 50% of jobs for women and ensure representation for individuals with disabilities and transgender communities in the facility.
State industries minister TRB Rajaa said the facility would make products for India and the globe. "This is an advanced manufacturing facility focusing on sustainability. It will be a lighthouse factory using Industry 4.0 techniques," he added.
