The main natural gas transporter in the country, GAIL, has partnered with US company LanzaTech to consider establishing a pilot project for carbon collection and conversion.
Sandeep Kumar Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director of GAIL, "the possibilities coming out of this collaboration with LanzaTech are very promising and significant to improving our carbon footprint." Utilising cutting-edge technologies from LanzaTech will improve our environmental stewardship and create new opportunities for advancing sustainability throughout our business.
LanzaTech's carbon capture and utilisation technology functions like a brewery. Specialised bacteria devour carbon-rich pollutants from industrial facilities and transform it into chemicals to make rubber, plastics, synthetic fibres, and fuels. After that, these materials can be used to create sustainable aviation fuel, laundry detergent, and clothes. "Waste CO2 can be used to make the things we need," stated Jennifer Holmgren, CEO of LanzaTech.
GAIL seeks to achieve net zero emissions from its operations by 2040. GAIL currently holds a 70% market share in the domestic gas transmission industry and more than 50% in the gas trading industry.
