BSES announced recently that India’s first commercially-approved standalone battery energy storage system, which can deliver four hours of power each day, is close to being finished at Kilokri in South Delhi. In connection with the project, 12 liquid-cooled batteries are being set up, with nine already installed and the rest anticipated to be added soon.
The company expects the system to be operational by late March or early April. The 20 MW BESS is being installed at the 33 KV substation of BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL) located in Kilokri.
This initiative represents India’s first independent BESS at the distribution level and will aid the shift to clean energy and the incorporation of renewable energy sources, as stated. The BESS is anticipated to last for 12 years and will employ cutting-edge Lithium-iron-phosphate batteries.
Aimed at handling variations in electricity demand, the system will enhance power reliability, stabilize the grid, prevent overload, and assist in the integration of renewable energy sources. The batteries will be recharged during off-peak times when excess or cheaper electricity is accessible and will release power during high demand periods.
This approach will help in lowering power purchase expenses by preventing costly market buys during peak demand periods. BRPL's BESS initiative features a robust monitoring and evaluation framework, designed to provide important insights to other distribution firms, state authorities, and industry stakeholders.
